"No Way I Want to Stay a Mere Human," Says UK Cyborg Professor

[Wednesday, February 05, 2003] Announcing a talk to reveal what it's like to have direct nerve communication with his wife, UK cyborg professor Kevin Warwick has stated support for Transhumanist ideas.

"The step to cyborgs offers humans a natural, technological upgrade in the technological world we have instigated," he says. "I feel it will be the next evolutionary step. Indeed we will need to do it if we are to compete with intelligent machines."

Warwick is known for several cyborg experiments, including having electrodes surgically implanted in his arm so that he could control an intelligent artificial hand.

He also undertook the world's first direct nerve communication with his wife after they both had implants surgically inserted in their arms.

Next Monday at Aston University in Birmingham, Warwick will reveal the results of this experiment. He will discuss both its effects on his nervous system and the implications for the human race.

But despite the well-known image of the Borg stating that resistance is futile, Warwick has no intention of forcing people to undergo cybernetic enhancement.

"Those who want to stay human can and those who want to evolve into something much more powerful with greater capabilities can," he says. "There is no way I want to stay a mere human!"
